How to Strap the Knee/MCL

This MCL strapping shows how multiple tapes can be used in conjunction for the greatest effect. This application will use Fixation Tape, Zinc Oxide and EAB and can be adapted to various areas of the body, including the elbow and lateral knee.

Step-By-Step Strapping Guide

STRAPPING THE KNEE/MCL

STEP 1

Create your anchors using Fixation Tape around the mid quad and upper calf.
The size of Fix Tape (5cm or 10cm width) that you use can be determined by the size of your patient’s joint.
Place further strips of Fix Tape vertically between your first 2 anchors, covering the line of the MCL.

STEP 2

Bend the knee slightly and then place your first strip of Zinc Oxide between the 2 original anchors directly over the MCL midpoint
Apply tape from the lower anchor in an upward direction.
Lay further strips of Zinc Oxide Tape down, fanning the MCL.

STEP 3

Overlap the Zinc Oxide using Tear EAB. Start by aiming the EAB diagonally down across the line of the MCL towards the medial side.
Wrap the EAB around the back of the calf, covering the fixing tape and then bring it back over the line of the MCL in a figure of 8 shape.
Finish by wrapping the anchors around the quad, fully covering the Zinc Oxide and Fix Tape.
This EAB overwrap provides additional support to the area and ensures the Zinc Oxide application is fully protected.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ZINC OXIDE WHITE AND ZINC OXIDE TAN TAPE?

Zinc Oxide Tape is not waterproof but it is water resistant. However, unlike other tapes, our glue is laid to make sure the tape is porous, allowing the skin to breath and moisture to wick away more easily.

As a result it is more suited to withstand the demands of sport. Our Zinc Oxide Tape has been used by water sports athletes with great success.

IS ZINC OXIDE TAPE WATERPOOF?

Shaving before applying is not necessary. The level of adhesion combined with adequate pressure will hold the EAB in place.

SHOULD I SHAVE BEFORE APPLYING EAB TAPE?

Our EAB glues don’t contain any colophony or rosin, which are the normal irritants for anyone with an Elastoplast allergy.

However, we would recommend that anyone with an Elastoplast allergy trials a small test patch before using EAB Tape as the skin sensitivity may disagree with any kind of adhesive against it.

If you have a known allergy to Zinc Oxide, then you should opt for a different tape as EAB uses a Zinc Oxide glue.
