We've already delved into exactly what it takes to become a world-class rugby physio 🏉 We've explored a what a day in the life looks like for an International cycling therapist 🚴🏼♀️ This week, we're taking a more in-gym focus...
To any athletes based in and around the Essex area, then you should be familiar with 5Physio. We spoke with chartered physio, Daniel Nunn, about the work that he and his team do at some of the biggest CrossFit events across the country.
Here's everything that you should know if you're hoping to find some work within the sports and fitness side of physiotherapy.
BECOMING A CROSSFIT PHYSIO:
WHO ARE 5PHYSIO?
If you follow their Instagram (@fivephysio), then you'll know that the answer to that question is - the most active physiotherapy in the country.
Aside from pumping out regular quality content, they're one of the biggest sport and back injuries clinic in the Essex area. In the three years since their doors opened, they've grown and grown, starting with two people to now working with a full team of 20.
In recent months, the clinic has become pretty active within the CrossFit and function fitness community🏋🏽 It's definitely not something that they've shied away from and have managed to build a team of willing young physios that have positioned themselves well within the high-flying trajectory of CrossFit competitions in the UK.
BECOMING A CROSSFIT PHYSIO
WHERE DO YOU START?
When we asked Dan Nunn (5Physio head-physio) that question he told us that it actually found them.
"We were actually put forward by a lot of different CrossFit boxes to join forces with different CrossFit events such as Turf Games. The community amongst these gyms is like nothing we’ve seen before and so everybody tends to know everybody in that world."
Building connections and putting you and your clinic out there for people to notice is a great starting point if you're looking to work at events, like Turf Games. It does take a lot of preparation, but according to Dan, it's totally worth it.
WHAT EVENTS CAN YOU COVER?
Physio work can take you all over the place. Particularly in sport.
Dan and his team have already found themselves working at, or scheduled to work at, events like, Nuclear Fit, Farm Games, Essex Games and Turf Games, as we've already mentioned. Their responsibilities tend to be mainly focused around sports massages and taping. But, they wouldn't say no if you wanted them to look at another knock you might have...
CROSSFIT INJURIES
If anyone isn't completely clear on exactly CrossFit is, it's basically a crazy fitness programme that pushes you to your limits with a range of different exercises. The people that do it tend to look like they were sculpted by the gods🤩
With regards to injuries, it does very much depend on the events that are on each day. According to Dan, "some are really grip heavy exercises and some are more compound heavy exercises. Generally the ‘grippy ones’ mean we will be treating a lot of forearms throughout the day and the more ‘compoundy’ the move, the more lower backs we tend to treat".
You're going to want to make sure that you bring the vibes🤪 to these events, because they can be "exhausting". You can see between 20-30 people and it's really important to stay cheery all day.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?
One thing that we wondered here was, what are the best ways to tape an athlete that is exceptionally sweaty? Unsurprisingly, high intensity interval training is a sweaty old workout for most.
"We’ve always found the Extra Sticky K Tape from SPORTTAPE is the best. Alongside the Pre-Tape Spray. These are a must in the physio ‘kit bag’ for us."
Another thing that Dan could not stress enough for any aspiring physios was "know the sport". Train yourself. Understand the different exercises that your patients are going to be doing. Understanding the sport more than the athlete you're treating is a really powerful tool.
"People want your expertise...We may not be able to train like them (I’ve tried and failed) but we can understand the patterns of movement better which gives the athlete a lot of faith in your abilities."
WHAT'S NEXT FOR 5PHYSIO?
That answer is easy. The plan is to continue to grow at the rate that they are now (and pumping out educational content on the daily).
"Only 3 years in, some would say the company is still in its infancy and who knows what the future holds. But holding onto the values that got us to this point now will allow us to keep opening up new clinics in different areas, reaching a much bigger audience and giving them access to what we consider to be the best level of physio care out there."
If you've got a CrossFit or extreme fitness event coming up in the next few months, keep a close eye out whilst you're there, because you may have a chance to get strapped up or massaged by a member of the 5Physio team.
We'd like to thank Dan Nunn for taking the time to answer our questions and we wish him and the rest of his physio team over at the clinic the very best going forward! 💪🏼
